I think he didn't convince anyone who didn't already support ObamaCare.

As to whether that is a good thing, that's a matter of perspective.

Indeed, this speech needed to be made months ago. Not only has he squandered political capital with his ill-advised approach, he is now facing a determined and energized opposition that will not easily yield. Due to many tactical errors, he faces a stark choice: passage through budget reconciliation, or accept defeat.

Personally, I've never been seduced by his towering speeches. I'm far too cynical to be charmed by his notions of change and hope. But, I believe there is someone out there that might reanimate my faith in public policy.

It seems to me his speech has energized and is uniting his party. Looks like he is calling for a greatly reduced and emasculated public option for the left, as part of a coop pool like one Massachusetts implemented for those who cannot now get group insurance, as well as outlawing some of the insurance companies worst practices. The Democrats are likely to unite around this out of self-preservation, and he will then only need one Republican Senator. He may get a a handful from Maine or elsewhere.

this was my takeaway also. given the rebuke McCain has given Obama, it seems pretty square on.
