Sorry if this has been brought up, but does anyone know what Thursday's cancer announcement might be?
I think connected with a virus that health workers have been tracking this year.

Only 15 hours or so until the announcement. No one has heard what it is?
I only know that it is a virus thought now to be more common than HIV, and that it relates to cancer.
Cervical and (somestimes) throat cancer have viral links, but apparently this is new...

Not sure. The original speaker contracted the virus and is now dead, body preserved in Area 5.... wait. too much information. Looks like the NCI may be giving the announcement tomorrow some after noon.

I heard about this a month ago, then a week ago, so I posted here to see if anyone knew details. I can wait a few more hours to hear about Doomsday, though. 15 hours...that's 15 beers....

(I heard it "might be of some concern" so Just Stay CALM!)

Which movie is this "viral" marketing for again?

I guess we can all laugh at this in a few hours, but NCI has been working behind the scenes for weeks before deciding to make a statement. Thursday afternoon.

Looks like it.

Only 3-6% of Americans have this retro virus. I thought it was going to be horrible like the killer bees that invaded.

3-6 % is not that small a percentage if this is something serious . A link to the announcement please.

The dying words of the biochemist before he was preserved in Area 51:

"Other important points, (cough) the virus is almost certainly in the blood supply (cough), and there is no test in place to prevent this yet. The virus infects lymphocytes (T and B cells). Very related viruses in animal models that infect (cough, cough) lymphocytes reproducibly cause cancer. Other than some suggestions of involvement in prostate cancer, we have no idea of the other potential cancer associations of this virus. If in 3-6% of individuals, it could be huge ... especially those that are immune impaired at times or generally immune deficient ... (weeze) allowing the virus to replicate efficiently in vivo ... (cough) integrate in front of certain genes ... and then potentially transform the cells. Once people get past the CFS thing (not to trivialize it, but the background infection rate in non-CFS people is very high), these dots will eventually be connected (cough cough), and this virus has the potential, if really spread through the population (we need a big epidemiology study to confirm), to be a serious health problem. <<Thud>>
