I don't think Aubrey is a cynic at all, with what he is doing for life extension--quite the opposite (about supplements, and CR he is realistic--along the lines of realism he is signed up for cryonics in case it will work, because it is likely, not impossible--but likely that humans will not end aging in his lifetime).

cyn·i·cal (sn-kl)
adj.
1. Believing or showing the belief that people are motivated chiefly by base or selfish concerns; skeptical of the motives of others: a cynical dismissal of the politician's promise to reform the campaign finance system.
2. Selfishly or callously calculating: showed a cynical disregard for the safety of his troops in his efforts to advance his reputation.
3. Negative or pessimistic, as from world-weariness: a cynical view of the average voter's intelligence.
4. Expressing jaded or scornful skepticism or negativity: cynical laughter.

What I meant is that he seems cynical toward interventions we all have access to. He obviously thinks supplements and proper dietary attenuation will have nill effect on our lives. I think he is wrong.

Yes, I think it seems a bit hypocritical at times; and in my eyes reduces his credibility. As a proponent of life extension, why would you not do all you can to increase your lifespan?
Some would argue that he is by drinking beer as it has very trace amounts of protein, which is good, as excess protein has been linked to reduced lifespan in CR studies and in general, because it raises IGF-1, amongst other things.

At the end of the day, I am happy to see that Aubrey is in good health, regardless of beer drinking; and this is critical in his position of ultimately being a role model to others, which is inherently what you become when you take on a
position of leadership for a cause i.e. SENS.

I'd rather have him drinking beer then smoking a cigarette, which he would obviously never do. Hey, I love beer myself, but don't drink it in copious amounts. I enjoy one up to three beers at a time and enjoy good craft and microbrewed beers as opposed to adjunct crap like Bud. Beer drinking is a fun hobby and studies have shown that moderate drinking of beer can help stave off neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's. It's 3:30 AM and I can't sleep, lord knows if I had a beer handy I'd probably guzzle it down right now!

He doesn't say nil, nor even negligible which I think you meant--but for any matter it is more of a, "yeah realistically the amount is small, and you should stay happy and do what you enjoy in life" sort of person-- here is an actual quote of his on CR:

"For the avoidance of doubt: though I think that CR will probably give humans only 2-3 years of extra lifespan at most, I certainly don't disapprove of it -- the health benefits are clear, as shown in the Holloszy and Fontana work, and even 2-3 years may make a big difference to quite a lot of people. So I approve of CR."

From April's Blog: http://www.mprize.or..._de_grey_1.html

April is Michael Rae's girlfriend--both follow CR, very nice people and stimulating to hang out with. (Michael Rae is Aubrey's co-author for Ending Aging and they've had many discussions about the science of CR :) )

Also, on the note of this thread--anyone that travels to Cambridge to meet Aubrey, he will most assuredly take them to a pub for a great beer--so you can go ask him yourself and give a report in the thread :p Be prepared to talk life extension, and know all the current researchers :)

I am so sick and tired of everyone referring to GOD without providing us with the referenced source. This thread is really going down hill without the presence of elijah3, who, if here, would have provided us with all the appropriate refencing....and then some.

Yeah, where is Elijah3? He's needed in the existence of God thread :)
