I doubt I will make any friends by sharing a very personal observation, possibly distorted, which struck me recently.
I was watching a C-Span Book-TV program on anti-semitism. I was suddenly struck by the similarity between the paranoid ideas anti-semites (and those who beleive in other world-control conspiracies) have with those who worry about the singularity.
I'm sure none of those here (apparently about 50%) like such a comparison. However, it stuck me that those who see any supposedly "superior group" manipulating (and controlling or seeking to control) the world share the (in my opinion) paranoid and distorted world view of those of you who see the singularity as a real threat.
What is the real difference between those who see members of The Trilateral Commission or Skull-and-Bones conspirators manipulating the world and those who believe an inhuman "greater intelligence" like the singularity is going to take over the world?
I have to say that I really had a dreadful feeling when this realization leaped out at me. I would be delighted to see the very idea totally demolished by your responses. Until that time, I have to stand by my initial observations. I could have gone into the "singularity is nonsense" thread but I am one of those "Christians"(rhetorical excess) who like the idea of going out and wrestling the lions one-on-one (or one-against-dozens). [lol]
