One great anti aging strategy that is not well known is fasting. From the beginning, fasting practitioners appeared to be much healthier and had longer lives than regular, ordinary people. Its usefulness for health has never really been in doubt.

Is it any wonder that many religious texts mention fasting? All contemporary religions place a high regard on fasting, and those who underwent fasting were said to be empowered to carry out their religious missions.

It seems that fasting can elevate a person towards a higher level, both physically and spiritually. The unspoken fact is that fasting significantly elevates growth hormone levels, which have a positive bearing on all facets of a human being's health. So naturally, most religions have a high regard for fasting, although they do not explicitly state that fasting causes a rise in HGH levels.

Only in recent times, has the value of fasting come to light. Modern science is now confirming that fasting has many positive effects in the context of life extension.

You see, when you fast, it stimulates HGH release, and this increase of growth hormone will result in better health, and increased longevity. Many spas have opened today that advocate fasting and juice fasting (a milder variety of fasting). These health centers are getting more and more popular, with good reason. Obviously, these fasting centers understand that fasting promotes growth hormone release and with it, a whole host of health benefits.

The increased HGH release will be utilized by the body to rejuvenate the function and lifespan of all the cells. Healthier cells mean healthier systems, thus a healthier body. Fasting triggers the pituitary into action by inducing it to pump out more growth hormone. The "stress" that fasting places on the body is actually a "good" type of stress. And of course, fasting gives the body the chance to "spring clean" itself from all the accumulated toxins.

The resultant heightened HGH levels is responsible for most of the positive physical, mental, and spiritual states that fasting practitioners attest to. In some cases, people who fasted have related that they felt euphoric, enlightened, and energized in every way.

So in conclusion, fasting is natures very own potent life extension "pill" that works to boost lifespan and increase states of health in all living things that for whatever reason, limit their caloric and food intake. Fasting raises HGH levels which improves the body's health significantly and prolongs lifespan.

And where is the evidence for this claim?

If you hear a loud splash, it is the longevity crowd abandoning the intermittent fasting boat?

No way. It's the most reliable way to stimulate autophagy (without committing to CRON). I'd continue even if that were the only benefit. Not that I think HGH or any other anabolic hormone (insulin, DHT, IGF-1...) is something a life extensionist wants to boost, but since IF seems to improve fasting glucose and increase insulin sensitivity, not to mention boosting BDNF, activating SIRT1, etc, I think the balance of evidence is strongly in favor of IF over consistent ad lib food consumption.

My mistake then. I thought many life extensionists were allergic to HGH. :)

This is a well proven fact that eating less calories than required lengthen the live span in humans. But no one is really sure wether it is because of the increase of HGH alone. It is however suspected that maybe it is combination of HGH and the activation of the aging gene which incidently can be activated by resveratrol.

Is it well proven that calorie restriction lengthens the lifespan of humans? I'd be surprised if there was a study done on humans, as I've only been able to find monkeys and a few other mammals, in addition to the seemingly long and difficult process by which such a study would be completed by.

What a great idea to exhume a more than five year(!) old thread to let us know this...
