Hi,

I did something terribly stupid yesterday and almost killed myself by combining Phenelzine with PEA. Heart pressure went through the roof up to 220/130 or something. Worst headaches of my whole life. I don't which this to happen to my worst enemy :-(
The thing is that Phenelzine is an irreversible MAO inhibitor and I urgently need to know how long it approximately takes until MAO levels are back to normal. I remember reading that it might take several weeks or even months. Is that true? It would be great if you could cite some reference. All doctors I talked to since yesterday couldn't give me reliable information. Hell, most of them didn't even know Phenelzine or PEA. I can't even recall how often I had to spell those damn words.

Thanks a lot guys!

i sympathize with you ,i don't know the mecanism of action, ... but the body is amazing to adapt and protect itself, i'm sure you'll be fine. But i'm wondering why you would even have a bottle of pea ? get rid of this sh*t. No one , except for those looking for a buzz, should take amphetamine like compounds that makes your brain power/energy crash or damage you brain. The temporairy boost ususally comes with a price. Anyways good luck and stick with light noots !

Thank you for your kind words, but really no need to sympathize me with ;-) It was just foolish what I did and with sufficient research I should have known to better not combine those two substances.
I indeed took the PEA for a little buzz for learning at night. Some months before I used to combine Selegiline with PEA and it worked just fine. But then again Selegiline is just a MAO-B inhibitor :-/

I just read a quote on Wikipedia which states that it takes roughly 2 weeks for MAO levels to return to normal. Does that sound plausible?

Oh btw, I will defintely stick with light noots in the future or maybe stop using them alltogether.

it's supposed to be in the ballpark of 2-4 weeks. for now, it's probably best to avoid supplements that tinker with your dopamine or acetylcholine levels. a quick search on pubmed will let you know how X has an effect on Y or Z neurotransmitters.

in the meantime, why did you take the combination? what were you trying to accomplish?

Thanks Pike! I'll definetly avoid any supplements and of course certain foods that could potentially interact with a MAO.

I was actually trying to get a slight mood lift + motivation for learning at night. When I combined Selegiline with PEA I skimmed through the pages with ease. Strong nootropic effect without actually making me high. Now with Phenelzine the PEA almost killed me although I only took half the dose :-/

oi. selegiline only inhibits MAO-B. phenelzine inhibits both MAO types. i think there's your problem right there. mao-b is basically just dopamine and some PEA metabolization. inhibiting mao-a is when things can get dangerous.
