Does anyone have experiences of using phosphatidylserine-DHA complex as a nootropic?

A certain product containing this conjugation promises the following support:
* Increased cognitive abilities
* Faster recall
* Increased DHA availability to the brain
* Increased memory

Apparently this complex should be more beneficial than simply stacking PS with DHA.

I get great benefits from PS, I take with regular fish oil however. What is this product called? I think the member steven d has taken something similar.

Is there a theory why taking a combined PS-DHA is better than taking PS and DHA together in separate supplements? I'm curious about the proposed mechanism of action.

Nevermind. I found the reason why.

I'm now interested in this too.

I bought: http://www.vigorousl...lishth30ca.html which was the cheapest I could find. I'm willing to try this out. It's the same type of argument they make for krill oil.

The product I'm talking about is Sharp PS gold from an Israeli company named Enzymotec. The schematic structure of the Sharp PS gold:

Sharp PS gold is used in numerous other products as a single ingredient or as a part of a formula. Examples include "Country Life Sharp Thought" which bmud said he bought in the above message and "Life Extension Cognitex".

unless the sharp-PS series sees a dramatic reduction in price, i see no major benefit to buying specific ps-dha conjugations, especially when DHA by itself is largely ineffective for controlling ADHD and EPA-heavier studies were the ones that mostly showed the benefit to ADHD. heck, the study in which DHA was exclusively used showed no benefits at all. one dha-heavy study actually showed a marginal increase in aggression.

I'm using Lecithin Granules as a source of Phosphatidylcholine and Phosphatidylserine. The Granules comes in a packet of 500g for $12.90.

Depending on the quality, as 1 tablespoon of the Granules = 10g of Lecithin, it consists of about 2g of Phosphatidylserine and about 3g of Phosphatidylcholine. I usually take 1tbspn 3x/day.

I've been taking this since 1990.

Its effect is enhanced when I take it straight with 2 boiled eggs with the yolks still soft, but the egg whites already hardened. ( With the eggs, I only take it 3 times a week ).

Along with that, in the past 3 yrs I also take it with DHA-enriched Omega-3, in which 1 caps contains 500mg DHA. I usually take 2caps twice/day

I consider both DHA + Lecithin are the building blocks of the neurotransmitters, so it is important to use them with any Racetams or other Nootropics for greater effects.

DHA and Lecithin are really beneficial to me, as they help to stabilise blood cholesterol level ( decreases LDL, increases HDL) and support liver function, so my blood tests results always came up to be in top condition.

With any pre-mixed products, usually the amount of choline or DHA is too small compared to what I've been taking, and I have used some pre-mixed products but noticed little improvement.

This is my personal experience with those two products.

Thanks for posting your experiences Dave, although originally I thought this thread would be about the single molecule where DHA is embedded in PS, not about the two separately.

bmud: That's an interesting research you linked.

Pike: the question is, does the DHA work as expected in the brain when taken independently or does it need to be embedded in PS? To my understanding the PS-DHA conjugation is pretty similar to the PS found in bovine (and human) brains. And also to my understanding bovine PS has worked very nicely as a memory enhancer, but later ceased producation because of the fear of mad cow disease. That's why the PS sold these days is from soy and differs from the bovine and human PS.

Google Scholar and bovine PS (bc-ps):
http://scholar.googl...m...aku&as_ylo=

EDIT: According to this source, the efficacy of soy-based PS is just as good as that of the bovine PS. They site this study: http://www.awtt.com/memo2.html

I've found one critical voice, Ray Sahelian:

The studies with PS have used bovine cortex as the source. Can we assume that the results with soy-derived PS would be similar? Each PS molecule contains two fatty acids. The fatty acids in PS derived from soy are mostly 16 and 18 carbon molecules such as palmitic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic. These are small chain fatty acids and have fewer double bonds than the fatty acids in PS derived from bovine brains, such as arachidonic acid and DHA, which are polyunsaturated and have longer chains of 20 and 22 carbons. Human studies with soy-derived PS have not been published in reliable, peer-reviewed journals. However, there have been a number of studies evaluating the role of BC-PS in cognitive function particularly in age associated memory impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. Most of these studies have indicated that BC-PS improves memory and cognition in those with age related cognitive decline (Crook 1991, Cenacchi 1993), and helps improve memory and recall in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (Engel 1992, Crook 1992).

It'd be interesting to hear your view on PS-DHA's efficacy once you get it.

I've been on it a couple of days and can't say I've noticed anything.

I think I won't order it then. I've been using regular PS for a couple of days and haven't noticed anything either.

LIB said in another topic that he's had great results using Jarrow's PS. It would be interesting to know how that differs from other brands he has tried. The PS product I'm using has 421 mg of phospholipids per capsule and only 100 mg of it is phosphatidylserine. It's still insanely expensive.

The conclusion I reached while researching PS for the video below... Is that it is magic for stress management but if you want to boost an already healthy memory there are more proven less expensive Nootropics out there... Agree? Disagree?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRT23GqOT1Q
Two Questions:
  • Any anecdotal experiences on PS specific to healthy memory?
  • Time table for stress relief? Does it hit you in 5 minutes like a glass of red wine? Or does it take hours or days to really rid your mind of stress? Is it something one needs to take daily to keep the stress away?
