Tonight I'm posting from a hospital bed, with an IV in my arm. I had Swine flu about 10 days ago. Several weeks before that I had a really nasty cold. This left my lungs in not very good shape for fighting off infections. Even though the flu wasn't really that bad and I got over it, I was all set up for a bacterial secondary infection. I did in fact get one, and treated it succesfully with Zithromax. Then last night, while still on a 10-day course of Zithromax, I spiked a fever and had a huge coughing fit. Today my white count was 40,000 (in some unspecified units), and I had a pneumonia visible on x-ray. So here I am in the hospital. This sucks. People are constantly in and out of my room, so sleep doesn't seem to be something they put a high premium on. I'm getting IV Levaquin, and am about to get Vancomycin added to the mix. I have a bag of ice under each arm because I'm having a hard time knocking the fever down with drugs. My story is fairly common, I'm told. They say it's the third infection that kills you.
If I'd had a chance to get the H1N1 vaccine, I definitely would have, and then I probably wouldn't be posting from a hospital bed. I'll say one thing; it's really cool that they have free WiFi.
