... or so this article claims: http://www.ananova.c...nceanddiscovery

Wonder cream keeps you young

A wonder cream that claims to stop people growing old has been revealed by scientists.

The treatment effectively means that humans could live for ever and wrinkles would stop ageing.

The cream works by stopping the body's individual cells from dying.

Experts believe that, as well as halting the ageing process, it could lead to cures for diseases such as cancer.

Dr Madalena Tarsounas, of the Cancer Research Institutes, said: "This could mean our skin, organs - everything in our body - do not age at all.

"We are effectively stopping the clock and making these cells immortal."

She said the key was a molecule called RAD51D. The treatment, which has not been tested on humans yet, could be administered with a simple injection.

Dr Tarsounas added: Understanding how cancer cells remain eternally young has been a key focus of research for more than a decade, so it's exciting to have made such a striking discovery."

Seriously... I can't believe that I'm actually reading this. I'm also not sure how seriously I am supposed to take it.

Sounds allot like an exploit of the recent discovery of RAD51D.

It's quite a claim that Dr. Tarsounas is making. She could kiss her reputation goodbye if this was a hoax. On the other hand, I have a hard time believing that the world's aging problem has already been fixed, while most experts in the field agree on the fact that it's gonna take at least a few decades to get the job done.

Oh well... I guess time will tell.

Heh, maybe they slapped a Membrane Translocation Sequence onto RAD51D
Just kidding :)

blocking cellular senescence without increasing apoptosis is a recipe for cancer... fewer wrinkles but more tumours is not likely to be that attractive..

Blah, so increase the apoptosis then -- out with the old and in with the new -- metabolism is as much about destruction as it is about construction. :)

To me, proper application of apoptosis could even be used to remake the body, and transform it into something better, by eliminating the vestiges of the older genome, while you aggressively promote a newer and improved one.

This is also why I moved away from telomere research.

And doing a controlled apoptic elicitation would require unique cell death receptors which isn't supported by our two main receptors TRAIL and CD95. So, I don't think its fesable...or least the easiest way to go about this.
