This is worth a look:

Leo Strauss and the Grand Inquisitor, by Shadia B. Drury.

It supports my conjecture that American ruling elite cynically uses religion, especially christianity, to keep the sheep in line. (Ironically they haven't figured out how to do that in Iraq.) Lately the elite seems to have latched onto the "Left Behind" fable as an additional tool of religious repression and conformity, considering that mainstream media (Newsweek, Time, 60 Minutes II) have implicitly legitimized it with serious, respectful coverage.

I like the heading on this page advancedathiest. One of the biggest challenges to my Christian upbringing came whilst working as a maintainence electrician in a meatworks (slaughterhouse). I've seen what happens to the sheep when the shepherd's finished with them, and it aint pretty!
