I drink two to three cups of apple juice or apple cider. Any good things about this habit?

Ehh.. I would suspect that has too much sugar.

Welcome to the forums by the way.

Awesome! Here are some recipes. You know, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and a cup of cider contains the juice of two to three apples. So theoretically, a cup of cider a day could keep a doctor away for three days.

So, let's assume that you can drink 6 glasses of cider a day.

If you could drink six glasses a day for approximately twenty days you'd have consumed around 122 glasses of cider.

Effectually you'd be set for an entire 365 days of life, give or take.

Now, all you have to do is drink 6 glasses of cider a day and you should become immortal! [ggg] [ggg] [ggg]

1/4 cup sugar

1 cinnamon stick

Please consider the enormously negative impact of sugar on the biological process on the body on a cellular and on a systemic level. You get enough sugar in one of these drinks that what the body is evolutionarily adapted to handle in more than a week.

Besides being an addictive drug, large amounts of sugar is actually toxic to our systems. Vitamins B1, B2, & B6 are needed to detoxify & metabolize it & can be thus depleted. Sugar increases magnesium & calcium excretion in the urine & decreases overall magnesium absorption from food. Excess sugar contributes to amino acid deficiencies, because sugar & amino acids compete for absorption in the intestines. Specifically the influx of the amino acids tryptophan & phenylalanine are inhibited by sugars. High sugar intake undermines your immune system, can decrease the white blood cell count, leading to lower resistance to colds, flu, & other infections.

Perhaps the good nutrients in the cider would cancel out the detrimental components in the sugars?

Hehehe, It was merely a joke, BJKlein. lol

[unsure] Sorry to cause alarm, I didn't know if joking was allowed here or not. [unsure]

Perhaps a less refined source of sweetener could be used, such as glucose? [blush]

Glucose is exactly what you want to avoid. Most refined products have added glucose in one form or another. Pure apple juice with no added sugar should be okay though.

I disagree; humans need glucose to live.

glu·cose n.
A monosaccharide sugar, C6-H12-O6, occurring widely in most plant and animal tissue. It is the principal circulating sugar in the blood and the major energy source of the body.

Let me make it more clear, excess glucose is what you want to avoid. Excessive sugar intake, glucose especially, will cause a multitude of effects that will accelerate the aging process. The immediate effect of high glucose levels in the body will be a sharp rise in insulin levels. Repeated exposure to high insulin levels will cause organ damage, one example of which is type II diabetes. Long term effects of excess sugar intake include glycation and formation of other nasty byproducts of sugar metabolism. Most natural sources of glucose have it in tremendously lower amounts than what is found in products such as refined fruit juices.

Perhaps we could kill two birds with one stone here. Our bodies need exercise and work (passify the mind) to maintain homeostasis, so, if we pick our own apples and make our own cider we can get excersise in and choose how much natural glucose we flavor our cider with.

I'm fairly sure a glass of cider (in moderation) is better for you than if you weren't to have consumed any fruit juice at all.
