Few days ago i had a discussion about scientific research and an observer doing such research.
We talked about an Ethnologist which witnessed some sort of gang-rape, done by the men of a tribe in guinea, he did nothing to help the woman which was the victim of this "tradition".

If you ask me, if i would work as researcher in this field, i would not watch rape, murder, human-sacrifice or Genital mutilation, or other things which are sometimes seen as "cultural mannerism", if i could help.

But is it right to interfer with the object you observe?
What, for example, would be the right thing to do for researchers like the crew of the enterprise D (Picards Enterprise) while doing research on a far away planet?

moral relativism is the most stupid idea ever and yet so many otherwise intelligent people accept it. Just because there is no inherent bad, doesn't mean we cant have an objective criteria and treat morals as a system. Values can be justified.

Right is different for different people.

Depends on how much of a bad ass you are. If the researcher was a typical, glasses wearing, nerd who doesn't train or work out, the right thing (my opinion only) to do is keep researching. Otherwise if he interfered, he himself would probably get his own ass raped.

If the researcher was an ex-marine who has deep moral values and puts human life as the highest value in the universe, then he will defend that girl.
