Have you noticed that movies like madagascar 2 and ice age 3 are filled with sexual allusions, or is it just my sick imagination?

It's all about keeping the kids and adults entertained, by creating a layer of hidden sexual jokes that should go over the kids' heads.

That was probably so in the age prior to the internet. But I doubt it goes over their heads now, they likely get some even the adults might not get.

Well, by the age of about eight they know almost everything, I know I did and I didn't even have the internet until twelve.

I had a lot of time with kids of the age of 8, even at age of 14 they you can mention something right under their nose and they won't figure out what's happening there.

The thing is, at these ages kids usually don't even care about sex or are very innocent about it.

I'm teaching a sex-ed class today from the Our Whole Lives curriculum 4-6th: http://www.amazon.co...u...3899&sr=1-3

Now, this class is co-taught with my 13 year old daughter for her 10 year old brother and 8 year old sister. As I don't have a UU church in my current location (Calverley,Leeds,UK) we do home church (from the curriculum What Do You Stand For: http://www.dfdsseawa...49db8d4f907118f )

In previous years when I was living in Austin TX I taught the k-2nd grade human sexuality, as well as the pre-school human sexuality and one time the 4-6th. My eldest took the middle school version with Karen Rayne: http://karenrayne.com/ This was in addition to my teaching various UU world religion & social action curriculums to the pre-school through high school ages. The main focus of the UU church is for religious education, the human sexuality for children is adjunct, not offered at all UU churches and generally is put on for one age range per year. The teachers who do it go through a training to be certified, and usually there are only 2 teachers in an area.

Now, why all the background? Well I've observed my own children, I've see what other children at various ages know of sexuality. It is true that the children's cartoons are made to also entertain adults--but children do understand a lot more than people think. The awareness of the depth of some of the jokes does not come till they are older though and depends on the amount of education the child has had. In my own "hyper-educated" family-my 12 year old still explains some jokes to my 10 year old, often without the 8 year old "getting it".

Luna is right that kids at age 8 don't think about sex at least in the way an adult with full hormones does. They do by puberty though at 12-15. Even at age 8 children know what sex is though, and they do often (naturally) masturbate, or even sometimes fantasize about kissing their love--they also have crushes and sometimes pair up as boyfriend/girlfriend. Sex is natural, loving/animalistic--and I fell it is important to educate children about sexuality-within the context of what a healthy respectful, loving/fulfilling relationship is.

We'll be doing our own "home churching" in a few hours, I'll have to add in a discussion of what sort of sexual overtones they notice in popular cartoons :)
