I've been considering switching fish oil brands and wonder what people think of enteric coated varieties. According to nature's way, their fisol brand absorbs better in the small intestines and is less prone to oxidation in the stomach compared to non-enteric forms... but is this marketing-speak or actually true?

My belly has been sensitive, probably due to antibiotics, and I don't think the liquid/gel forms of fish oil has been agreeing with me lately.

Is Super fisol/fisol considered a good enteric form to use? Or is there something else considered better? I tried them once, years ago... and it seemed okay, although I needed to be careful swallowing their rock hard capsules -- not fun to get it stuck in one's throat.

I use a product called "DHA-500" (DHA/EPA) made by Now Foods that is enteric coated:

Some people do find fish oil hard to digest. And since you say your stomach is sensitive, an enteric coated variety may work better for you. I definitely prefer enteric coated varieties since I find they are easier for me to digest and don’t give me those unpleasant fishy after burps! I’m also careful to use fish oil supplements that contain pharmaceutical grade fish oil. I’m not sure if Super Fisol contains pharmaceutical grade fish oil. Maybe you should check it out. If you’re looking for quality fish oil then a pharmaceutical grade fish oil will give you the highest potency of EPA and DHA and the highest purity – contains no contaminants like mercury, lead, PCBs, etc. I like Triple Strength Omega 3 – it’s pharmaceutical grade fish oil and it has an enteric coating with Vitamin E that reduces oxidation. I have not tried Super Fisol.

For me, enteric coated caps were not being fully absorbed. I tried the Now product for a while.

I don't know if they took too long to dissolve or what, but I could definitely tell by the oil slick floating on the surface of the water in the toilet.

The stuff I use now from Iherb, they claim it is really fresh because they move it in such large quantities. I rarely have any fish burbs with it.

LEF's fish oil never gave me fish burbs either, but their stuff is pretty pricey.

Some other brands I've tried were pretty nasty.

What 'stuff' are you referring to?

I'm currently trying the Super Fisol. They seem to be absorbing, or at least I haven't noticed any oil slicks in my toilet, or white rocks coming out. 70% EPA/DHA, so the fish oil itself is relatively decent.

Only thing I dislike is the fact the pills are like little white rocks, so it's annoying to swallow. But I expect I'll get used to it. I also wonder what the enteric coating is made of, as they don't list ingredients for it -- I broke one open, which I usually do with the first capsule in the bottle to check how clean it is, and white flakes broke off, sort of like paint.

I'm also curious if their increased absorption claim has any truth. Nature's Way referenced the New England Journal of Medicine claiming enteric absorbs several times better than non-enteric fish oil, but all I could find was a study on Crohn's which used enteric fish oil.

Assuming my stomach ever toughens up again, I may go back to a gel formula, but for now I'll see how these do.
