Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). A fabulous institution. It is more competitive by far then MIT or Stanford. It is a rarified culture and one that really does understand the importance of knowledge and understands the importance of building the knowledge community through villages throughout India. They are not just about themselves. I think one of the things that are different about them is that they have a culture of focusing on bringing up their country. Raising it from it current level.

It might be more competitive than MIT to get into, but that is only due to lack of other educational opportunities in India. MIT is still near the top in terms of most objective university rankings that you will find, and I am particularly grateful for their pioneering OpenCourseWare program. It also manages to stay more focused on the hard sciences, and thus less "political" than most other top universities in America... But, oh, if only they could get the socialist hippies squatting in their computer labs to read up on basic economics... :)

MIT, IIT ? pfff there is an establishment in north China that approaches intelligence with the diligence that shaolin monks approach martial arts. They make MIT and IIT look like disobedient school kids. They Hone their breathing and heart rate in unison with their minds, they are located in the most perfect setting that promotes vitality and new ideas, they are of the most kind understanding and well rounded human beings anywhere. They prey to their minds and to mother earth and thanks for their intelligence.
They eat pre discovered diets that are perfect for promoting the utmost stable bodily environment for mental toughness, and relentlessness in finding the answers to problems to hard to comprehend by most. They are rumored to be 50 years ahead of any other educational establishment in existence, but feel their knowledge is to powerful to be shared with the immature society's that are prominent throughout the world.

At least that's what my stoner friend told me

I agree. First of all MIT and Stanford are highly desired schools that admit students from around the world. IIT is strictly for Indians (although they do have an admissions test which would probably be difficult for any US citizen since our high school CS programs are weak for the most part).

Lets take a look at some hard facts:

Population of US: 307,006,550 - Jul 2009
Population of India: 1,139,964,932 - 2008

Of course IIT is more competitive - they have more people and only 15 schools.
Also to note: "Some IITs were established with financial assistance and technical expertise from UNESCO, Germany, the United States, Japan and the Soviet Union." (wikipedia)

No doubt their background education prior to college is superior to what our high school programs here in the US provide- like you said, its a different lifestyle.

Isn't this true in much, perhaps most of the developed world? The best US universities are hard to beat, though.

No matter how well ranked any school is, the best education around is found on the internet. And admissions aren't too competitive.
