An older friend of mine was diagnosed (sleep clinic) with moderate sleep apnea. He has been using a CPAP machine and has been sleeping better, but still hates to be dependent on the machine. Is there a surgery that can help him? He's not over-weight, but does have a bit of fat around his neck. Is there an alternative to CPAP?

There are dental appliances that are supposed to be effective for moderate sleep apnea (has to be fitted by a dentist). There are also surgical options that he should discuss with his doctor.
