I see they were enabled, so what your saying is that you now dissabled them in this new format?

I thought they added to the forum. They seem to help show where people stand, and help show that more people are standing, rather than leaving us in a bit of doubt as if many people in the topic actually support the cause. They also have a way of educating people about key concepts, since many peoples signatures are key little fundamental quips and insights.

I know that a lot of people like signatures, but I am with caliban on this. Signatures are sometimes brilliant, sometimes funny. Until the fifth time you've read it. Then it gets tired. There are places in our profiles where we can put our most crucial thoughts; we can even squeeze a few of them into the avatar block of our posts. I hope that we will keep our signal to noise ratio high.

Argh, now that i dug up my file of hand-selected truths, explaining life and the world in so few words...
I'm with BP on this one.
With the new layout template screen real estate isn't that expensive, and I'd prefer quotes over added spam.
If you want to save space then go with the reply function.
Choosing a random quote from a list is a matter of 2 lines of php.

signatures are annoying and invariably used for viral marketing.

Perhaps a compromise would be something like in this forum, referring to the 'quip' located just below the users name. I would be surprised if this new forum design didn't support something similar which puts the personalised signature outside of the posts itself and in the avatar block.

I agree with both sides, like brokenportal I enjoy the personalised touches, however like niner I can get a little tired of reading them in every post, and they do have the ability to become too much. The quip feature I linked too above is a nice compromise IMO.

I think it would be nice to disallow pictures in sigs. Thought they were pretty annoying for the few days they were around. We don't need some kind of stylized mega-avatar to show how much we like the forum (*cough* M&M *cough*). And the inevitable "Photobucket: file not found" pics definitely don't add anything.
