A close relative of mine has been a cancer sufferer for 16 years now. She´s about to start her third round of quimmotherapy, has a 9cm tumour and is wondering what she can do to help from a nutritional/supplemental/life style point of view. She´s 62. Thanks in advance :)

It's a bit difficult to comment if we don't even know what type of cancer she has. What is the history - has it metastasised, for example?

Elenai if you do a 'cancer site:imminst.org' search you will start to find plenty of interesting threads on cancer and from them possible nutritional/ supplemental advice.
Also in the following threads users have added their advice and suggestions

I have had cancer for 8 years and am coming to the end of another treatment phase of Chemotherapy.
I eat a mostly Ketogenic diet (can be difficult during chemotherapy) and I am looking into taking various dosages and formulations of Curcumin, Resveratrol, Fish Oils, Ip6, EGCG, Vit D3, Lactoferrin, Sodium Selenite, Flax pre lignans, D-limonene and a few others.
Depending on your relatives cancer type, general health and finances it might be worth researching them.

I'd urge caution on the resveratrol - please check that it won't interfere with any treatment you are currently on. Is your chemotherapy taxane based? Recent evidence is very mixed in this area - there are a couple of posts in the resveratrol topic that discuss this in more detail.

Thanks for the caution ppp, I have yet to begin taking any of the supplements in the regime,as im still trying to learn about them, and as i fear any slightest potential interference with my current chemotherapy protocol (ifos, carboplatin, etoposide).

My mistake. Breast cancer. She hasn´t metastasised yet, TG. It has came back something like 6 times. Third round of quemmo, hormone therapy won´t work any more apparently, had radio therapy but can´t go down that route more than once. She has a terrible history for anxiety, she´s a very anxious person but won´t go to the psichologist, she won´t hear of it. She won´t go on a ketogenic diet either :(

Thanks everyone for your input, I´ll scan those threads suggested.

I would really take at look at omega-3 fish oils - EPA and DHA - first. Take a look at this, for example:

Nutr Cancer. 2010 Apr;62(3):284-96.
Enhancing cytotoxic therapies for breast and prostate cancers with polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Shaikh IA, Brown I, Wahle KW, Heys SD.

Cancer Medicine Group, Division of Applied Medicine, Medical School, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, UK.
Abstract

The role of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids has been extensively studied in most of the human malignancies including breast, colon, prostate, pancreas, and stomach cancers. In particular, the role of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in carcinogenesis has been extensively investigated in epidemiological, laboratory cell culture studies and studies in vivo in animal. Findings from these studies suggest that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are cytotoxic in different cancers and act synergistically with cytotoxic drugs. Although experimental evidence for the potential beneficial role of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in enhancing the effectiveness of various chemotherapeutic agents in animal models and in cell culture studies is increasing, there are only a few reports that have shown supportive evidence for linking these natural compounds with augmentation of anticancer chemotherapeutics in human trials. This review presents evidence for a commonality in the proposed molecular mechanisms of action elicited by various PUFAs believed to be responsible for their enhancement of the effectiveness of anticancer chemotherapy, specifically in breast and prostate cancers, and reviews laboratory and animal studies and few reported human clinical trials. It concludes that sufficient evidence is available to suggest that major clinical trials with these natural compounds as adjuncts to standard therapies should be undertaken as a priority.

Take a look at the link I've just posted in the previous message. Given the evidence for the effect of omega-3s on cancer and on mental states I would think it's an obvious place for her to start.
