Ok, not sure if it should really be in this topic but:

I am trying to decide what to buy, options are:
HTC Ace (wait for it to come out)
HTC Desire
iPhone 4
iPad
LapTop

Currenly I have the old type of phones which can't even browse the web.. I finally got a job and decided I want to be connected when I am out of my house, at work, at university.

I also want to be able to talk to my bf who is in England so a skype is a must have.

I'd love to be able to program when away but I was thinking to get a phone anyways cause they are more portable, just setting the laptop in the bus seems uncomfortable.

Reading books, iPad seems to be awesome for a lot of things, that is one big. Laptop can do that too but isn't as easy to pull of and use, heavier and less comfortable. smartphone? 3.7-4.3 inch screen? I dunno.

iPad seems to be great and portable but can't really be a phone I think? also lacks a lot of functionalities and expensive.

Laptop is heavy and not too comfortable to use in a bus or train station, definitely not at work...... blurgh too bad but sitll an option, I will have to get one one day if not now, I am sure. Working on my projects is important and laptop can provide games and multilayer that my bf and I love to play together, things I can't do when I go visit my dad for a few days.

smartphone - portable, an do pretty much all the basics but maybe bit small, still awesome I think, I am leaning toward this because of portability and functionalities, while not complete - it has a lot and is the easiest and most comfortable to carry around and anywhere, though I know it lacks a lot of functionalities I'd love, but it is just more portable and comfortable to use and seems to be worth it more, but I am not sure. :/

There is also the question of HTC Desire or HTC Ace (Desire HD) or iPhone 4. This is hard. The Ace is really exciting but not out yet, iPhone 4 seems to be reall cool but maybe that's all it is?

I think I chose to either buy the Desire or wait for the Ace, still looking for opinions though!

I absolutely love my iphone 4. I'm a bit of a mac design fan (not that their platforms don't sometimes have their flaws for serious work, but their interfaces are usually a thing of beauty). The "retina display" is astonishing (maybe I don't get out enough).

The phone is the most portable option, its my favorite toy by far. Can browse the web or read my mail while sitting in the car waiting for people.

However, if you aren't in love with the iphone4 screen, and/or like to program, Android is the way to go. I suspect the Android appstore will greatly surpass Apple's in the next few years. I suspect my next phone will be an Android platform of some sort for these reasons.

I recommend you-tube comparison videos to see both side to side (it may be hard to get an HTC Desire with the latest Android vs iphone4 though).

You really can't go too wrong with either, both are beautiful phones (HTC only from what I can see on youtube though!)

Apple does have that whole "live video feed conversation" thing, but I don't get a lot of mileage on that...

+1 for iPhone

I had an Android phone, Nexus One but sold it. They're harder to use and the apps aren't as good. The iOS UI is very nice to look at and just works without headaches. It also has an excellent Skype app. If you can afford an iPhone I would get that.

If you travel a lot I'd recommend a netbook. They're light and you can watch movies on them in the plane.

+1 for Desire.

I got mine about 2 weeks ago and and very happy with it. Don't like supporting companies like Apple with their propriety this and that and their lock down attitude.

Android is great and Gingerbread (new version of Android) is out now and should be available for the Desire soon. Supposedly Android phones are selling at a rate of 300 000 per day!!! I think that Android will swallow other phone OS's much like Windows took over the PC OS market 20 years ago.

As for the display, I don't think the specs indicate a huge difference.

iPhone 4 has a resolution of 640 x 960 on a 3.5-inch screen
Desire has a resolution of 480×800 on a 3.7-inch screen

Personally I prefer the slightly larger screen as it is more practical and easier to use. The new HTC Desire HD (formerly codenamed ACE) has a 4.3-inch screen with the same resolution as the original Desire (480x800). This may be preferred by people with bigger fingers. :) Personally holding all 3 phones in my hand, I feel the the original Desire just felt right for me.

Anyway Luna, given how long ago your original post was, which device did you end up with?

iphone 4 is the shiznit.....

only downside is you cant play flash, but sure you don't want to see flash videos in a phone. YOu have a laptop for that.

htc desire is good too. open source. i prefer the iphone..... more apps, and with apps like deskaid, you dont need itunes to transfer files across..

I have an android phone and love it. However, if you don't mind the wireless carrier (AT&T here :( ) the iphone is an awesome phone (beautiful screen). I've played with the iphone and it is a bit more polished (especially the facebook app). With the iphone you have one choice of hardware and carrier. Android is "catching up", but its not there yet. Just my 2 cents.

Get the best android phone available, root it, find a custom rom and you'll see what a joke the iphone is.

I also have a HTC Desire, and I, too, really like the open-source format. I could NEVER go back to my oldass phone, - no checking mails, weather, news, buying stuff on eBay, browsing the ImmInst ;), etc. I use the map function all the time, the street view is kool, it's a great tool for tracking your fitness/exercise achievements, music player, listening to audiobooks, u could spend a gazillion hours in the 'android market' browsing the apps. Just a great investment for me.

I'm not able to post on imminst using my iPad with the standard browser. It crashes when I enter text in the text editor. That's one serious flaw...
