Was wondering what your thoughts are about taking Chlorella and/or Spirulina as an all-in-one supplement, such as instead of taking multi-vitamin complexes.

People have been deterred by spirulina due to iron content. One thing you must do is buy it in powders; it's a super-FOOD, not a supplement, and you must eat a food-like quantity (at least 10 grams in one serving in my opinion); tabs/caps are almost a scam. When having fat doses of spirulina I've felt increased energy for a time. Chlorella I tried a few years back but didn't experience anything but I didn't take it in large quantities in a given serving. The spirulina taste gross in most cases but with the right things can complement or even improve the taste, I've only managed to hide the taste by mashing it into mince-meat or blending it into egg. ALthough it becomes an acquired taste after time if you mix it into fruit juice/smoothie, although only if you keep the dose low. I've also once or twice used it to garnish sea bass and that worked well. Spirulina is evil when it comes to mixing, when it gets wet it becomes a tar like substance that sticks to a spoon like crazy (although interestingly, if it gets mixed with oil AND water it'll stick to itself but not to anything else). Best use a blender unless you're mashing it into food. Chlorella, as I recall, wasn't as bad in regard to mixing, although it wasn't very soluble.

I buy bulk powders anyway. I produce the capsules myself.
I intend on taking 10 grams of Chlorella (I have noticed the large amounts of iron in Spirullina).
I'm just wondering if taking 10 grams daily is as efficient (or even better) than taking the content of Chlorella in supplement form.
For example, I bet that Chlorella has vitamins in their natural form, which might be better than just taking a vitamin-complex.

Was also planning on taking them both as well. Noticed on the purchasing website that 10g Chlorella = 77% DV of Iron while Spirulina contains only 44% for 28g.

Not a substitute for adequate nutrition. different kinds, different species of algae. Some are mildly toxic. I thought the spirulina fad peaked years ago. But I like the taste. Still, I don't use it.

Hi steelsky,
I use both Spirulina and Chlorella, have done for 2 years now and cant be with out it. The coments above are correct, chlorella has more iron. I found what works best for me is buying the mixed chlorella and spirulina which I get from: Spirulina

I started with spirulna for a few months, then I wanted to try chlorella, I did notice a difference with changing to chlorella. Then I tried the mix product which I feel is the best in terms of how I feel. Hope this is of some help to you :-)
