I see it in a lot of forums there just doesn't seem to be much mainstream/commercial support behind Beta Glucan supplementation, despite a large number of studies showing numerous benefits.

http://en.wikipedia....al_applications

Anecdotally, this is the first year in my life I've not been off work sick for a single day. Now I can't just attribute it to the Glucans because I've also raised1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D level from 23ng/mL to 54ng/mL

I take two capsules (2x 500mg) of Beta Glucan 1,3D daily.

Why is this so? and should this not be an essential supplement in any life extentionists regimen?

It's much cheaper and effective to eat straight steel cut oats.

Ta - any idea of any studies showing how much a Beta Glucan is in a cup of oats?

Two powerful solutions. The truth is not so easy to understand in this world. There are powerful influences that don't give a damn about real easy solutions. And they would go as far as disinformation in order to keep the system in place. The best is to use discernment.

It's my understanding that oat beta-glucans (1-3 1-4 beta-glucans) are effective for cholesterol reduction, as recently recognised by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The beta-glucans implicated in improving immune response are 1-3, 1-6 beta-glucans derived from yeast and other fungi. These ones cause the immune system to go on the alert. You can read more at [commercial link removed by moderator] and also on Wikipedia.

Edit: Removed commercial link.

If they work (and they seem to in me), taking beta glucans seems worth a try if you have a cold, or other infection... or maybe cancer. But, I'm not sure how wise it is to take them everyday for the long-term. It seems clear that they upregulate (in particular ways) the immune system and inflammatory signaling. Is that good long-term? I don't know and neither does anybody else

Yes I've wondered myself if you can have an overly strong immune system? Is there such a thing? How would it be measured?

are oats-derived beta glucans as effective as yeast derived ones?

The beta glucans from oats are mainly for reducing cholesterol and the glucans from yeast are to boost the immune system. I wouldn't take the immune boosting ones every day. I think raising vitamin D from under 30 to over 50 would have the biggest effect. I haven't been sick since Feb '05 that I can recall, but I take much more than just vit. D. I did vomit once from eating at Taco Bell 2 years ago though. lol

I don't believe stimulating the immune system with foreign antigens is a great idea, especially in high doses in healthy people. It causes the immune system cells to divide which could shorten telomeres in the long run. I think a better strategy is to address nutritional deficiencies first since they support multiple tissues in the body. If that isn't enough then look to substances like beta glucan, but more for short or long-term illnesses not healthy people looking to prevent illnesses.

Yeast Beta Glucan was approved as a novel food in the EU in 2018. And it was authorized to the placing on the market as a novel food ingredient in the EU in 2011.
China hereafter announced that yeast β-glucan was approved in the list of a novel food in 2010. And it was approved as nutritional supplements add to the Infant formula in 2012. The Ministry of Agriculture of China then applied yeast β-glucan as a new feed additive to animal production.

I suspect almost nothing. Oat bran, when indicated on the package, has between 6-8% Beta Glucans.

Though many oat bran products sold are actually a mix of bran and germ, and then the Beta Glucan content already lowers to half of that (when indcated on the package).

Andrew Weil takes 2x daily for immune support - LINK

He and his university are more plant based in their approach to health than some.

Other health conscience people like Rhonda Patrick, David Sinclair, Joe Rogan, Peter Attia, and Chris Kessler do not emphasize them in their protocol, however Weil is much older.

I take 1 daily from Host Defense, they recommend 2.
