The NY Times has an interesting article on how to substantially increase your odds of surviving a nuclear blast. In a nutshell: Don't try to flee immediately after the blast. Staying sheltered for as little as an hour, in a car, house, basement, or parking garage could make a huge difference in lethality from the hottest fallout.
