Geez, why can't mother nature keep it simple?

What's the purpose of this "I before E, except after C" stuff in protein coding?

You would think that nature would lean towards a straightforward coding, instead of all this exceptionalism.
What evolutionary justification is there for it?

Why should evolution have cared what its advanced products in the remote future would consider "straightforward" ? If the most stable of all accessible things is something that we call messy, then something messy is what happens. Aging is another good example ;-)
