I ran across this thought experiment a few years ago. The idea that the universe splits when there are two possible outcomes. It's not a new idea but I've been thinking a lot about it. Even made a film about it. have a look here www.thirdcontactmovie.com

it puts a human twist on schrodinger's cat. if you understand the nature of the experiment, it has amazingly mind boggling and serious consequences for the nature of reality.

It is based on several misconceptions. First, they assume the the unproved assumption that all branches of the quantum wave function are real, as opposed to being merely a device for calculating probabilities of outcomes as in the traditional interpretation. But there is no evidence or logical necessity for all the branches to be real. Then they claim that if you die in this branch there will be another branch in which you survive. This is the second misconception - even assuming all branches are real, there is no logical reason why you should not age and die in all branches. The third misconception is that you are immortal this way. What matters to you is that you age and die in this branch, what do you care if a copy of you in a different branch goes on - it would have nothing to do with you?

Thats the Stuff Max tegmark wrote about some years ago.
Ill explain it in a simple way:
You sit at the bussines-end of a Machinegun which is triggered by a quantum proces, and the theorie says that you will survive every time cause after the split you go into the universe where you survived, that means you will live on and never die
