My lips frequently get very dry and then the skin cracks. It's as if the skin is constantly sloughing off and I have a compulsion to bite the skin that's peeling off my lips. Is there any sort of treatment that can make my lips smooth? I've tried lip moisturizers but they aren't effective in limiting the skin from peeling off my lips.

I think this is due to severe sun damage. I have a similar problem, or I should say had, because I repeatedly sun burnt my lips as a child.

First thing is to stop biting off excess cracked skin because you wound your lips as you tear the skin away; much better to rub a wet toothbrush on your lips to help remove this skin. Your lips won't begin to heal if you keep damaging them and I know how unattractive it looks to have chapped lips but fight through this pain...

Always use sunscreen on your lips.

I use tretinoin .025% on my lips every other day or so, don't over due it because I think lips take longer to 'recover' from tretinoin use.

Always moisturize with Vaseline. I've tried many many lip balms that don't come close to Vaseline.

Drink lots of water.

Good luck.

It's not due to sun damage because I live in a northern climate and not only that I don't go outside very often and when I do I never stay out long enough to get burned.

I read something about low lysine or biotin causing that. Might be worth a google.

Fungal or bacterial infection is also a possible explanation. If it was a fungus, personally I would like to experiment a little bit and treat it with iodine tincture.

Just posted this in another thread too, but oral + topical lutein was shown to increase skin hydration by 82%.

This study was about atopic dermatitis, but coconut oil might be worth trying anyway:

The AD patients who were treated with virgin coconut oil in this study had significantly lower objective SCORAD scores for dryness and dryness-related conditions, such as excoriation and lichenification, and for erythema, edema, and papulation.

Magnesium helps a lot with this and makes lips fuller.

Dry / cracking lips are usually signs of nutritional deficiencies. Are you getting enough B vitamins in your diet? Especially B-1 and B-2. What about minerals?
