Well I just started university this week, and I bought 3mg pills of melatonin, I'd take ONE pill 30 minutes to an hour before sleeping and generally I'd feel pretty tired, so it helped me fall asleep easier.
Normally I'd get 7.5-8 hours of sleep (go to bed 10-11 wake up 6-6:30) and i was always tired in classes, but by the afternoon I was a bit more awake.

Last night I went to a party, had a few drinks (I was loopy but not very drunk), and came home. I still woke up at ~6 that morning and was tired during the day, but by the time I went to sleep it was around 2:30am by my estimation. I woke up and looked at my clock and it was about 8:30, so I only slept for a total of 6 hours. However, I took 2 pills of melatonin, 6mg total, and I feel fully rested from that, even though I worked out and had a relatively active day.

Is there any explanation for this? Could 3mg of melatonin just make me tired and 6mg make me not need as much sleep. From what I've read, it just helps you sleep the amount of time you need. With being 18 and working out I should need no less than 8, up to 10 hours a night. Also I tried to fall asleep for almost an hour of just laying in my bed and couldn't.

I've noticed taking melatonin simply makes me wake up 6hours after falling asleep. Then I simply go back to sleep. Doesn't really reduce necessary sleep time for me, just makes me wake up mid sleep... maybe due to stopping the body's own production since there is already some there? I have no idea.

You know you may have a point there, I think I remember waking up around 2 or 4 some days and just going back to sleep. Today however I couldn't go back to sleep after 6hrs and I was not tired at all really.

Would like to know what even causes you to wake up in the first place. What sort of chemicals/hormones/etc take place in the last stages of sleep and if a high incline to decline of melatonin can cause you to wake up after a certain duration. Sometimes I can wake up like right after rem and be awake for 2-3 hours(full energy), then just drop off and become tired again. I'm pretty sure room temperature can equate to how good you sleep. I feel I get more and better(rested) sleep when a room is colder. When it's hot I usually can wake up much quicker, sometimes with sweats. Yeah I'm weird.

Melatonin definitely disrupts my sleep cycle. It makes it much easier to fall asleep, but I'll wake up feeling weirdly alert but still physically tired. This effect seems to get worse with larger doses. I was taking 10mg(far excessive for sleep) for awhile for its antioxidant effect because I was paranoid about cancer after quitting smoking, and I'd regularly woke up after only 3-5 hours of sleep.

For what it's worth - even after taking an excessive dose of melatonin daily for a year, I had no signs of melatonin downregulation. I had no sleep issues at all when I cycled off the melatonin for a week after every bottle.

One problem though - melatonin supplementation made my rheumatoid arthritis symptoms far worse. My fingers swell up like fat little sausages after about a week of being back on melatonin.

I know I've kind of neglected this thread but lately I've been waking up at exactly 6am every day, with extreme accuracy [never over a minute off], usually getting 7.5-8hrs sleep. I have a few tests tomorrow so I took 2 melatonin pills, 6mg total, had about 7.5 hours of sleep, woke up full of energy and liveliness, I felt better than I have in a long time. It was the only time my alarm woke me up, my failsafe, at 6:30. But yeah this stuff really really works, I never would have said I slept badly but the temperature has been the same in this room and I slept the same amount but those 6mg just made it a 100x better morning! I was trying 3mg but I just guess it wasn't my dose.

Might try 9mg on the weekend, see if that does anything...

This sounds about right to me. My experience with melatonin is that it generally gives you a deeper sleep than you would otherwise get, so you may end up waking early on account of that.

Be aware that melatonin is a testosterone inhibitor, so (assuming you're a guy) don't overdo it.

Hmm could there be a connection between (back) pain and melatonin?

http://www.ehealthme...tonin/back pain

I'm also having back pain and taking melatonin. I will stop it for a while now and see.

However this:

http://fyiliving.com...n-relieve-pain/

states that melatonin could relieve pain...

Sometimes you just don't know what to believe anymore..

"Testosterone inhibitor"?

It means if you take too much of it for too long, it'll shrink your balls, reduce your sex drive, and maybe more.

Interesting... Can you show me your evidence of this?

I take Melatonin when i find it hard to get asleep. It doesn't knockm me out but it helps me sleep. Also it helps me have a good long sleep without interutpions. These days i was drinking too much caffeine and found out that although i could sleep easily i was waking up after 4 hours with no reason.Melatonin solved this until i built a tolerance to caffeine!

Also about the pain relief i feel that when i take Melatonin before bed,the other day i don't hurt so much in my spine cord.Strange but good!

I remember the first night i took a 3 mg pill of Melatonin i had so deep sleep that i had a dream that an elephant was sitting on me and couldn't get up :D

Be aware that MELATONiN increased TESTOSTERONE like x1000 timesfold, also it's very common to wake up in the morning and still feel very tired/sleepy, groggy, and with HEAVY Mental Fog, also you build crazy tolerance to melatonin, within a week, i can take up to like 10-20mg on the 7th day and only get about 3-4 hours of sleep at night, and then walk around like crazy all day,

i strongly recommend not to ever take more then 1-2mg at once per day, if you must !

Re testosterone I had heard the opposite. In any case, I stopped taking it a while back as I now believe that DMT is the top of that hormone chain and not melatonin. Doing things to increase DMT production does more for restful, dream-filled sleep for me.

I take melatonin nightly and what you're describing has never happened to me. Not even one time.

The ideal dose of melatonin for me is .5mg to 1mg time release, taken 3-4 hours before bed. 3mg melatonin or more would probably make me a zombie in the morning and not want to wake up. Optimal dosage is probably highly individual.

I have experienced requiring less sleep, or at least not being able to sleep more than 6 hours, on higher doses of melatonin.

"Hallucinogen" seems to be troll lol?

If melatonin increase REM sleep, and REM sleep is where our GH and TEST is the best...then wouldnt that be good? I have seen no source for that claim...? Do you say that because it is a hormone??

Anyways, my experience with Melatonin is that yeah maybe I do not require as much sleep, but also that I can if i choose to sleep for a long time after taking it. I do feel a little more groggy but when I get up and around it doesnt stick with me at all. I have never noticed tolerance. One of the most pronounced effects is that I sometimes feel like I get "stuck" in dream land...vivid dreams, sometimes good, sometimes bad...but vivid and not every night but possibly?
