People who drink in moderation are less likely than nondrinkers or heavy drinkers to experience health problems, study says.

  • Women who averaged 3 to 15 alcoholic drinks per week had higher odds of being healthy
  • The findings don't necessarily apply to men or to nonwhite women
  • Experiments have shown that moderate alcohol intake can reduce inflammation

I think part of the reason for this affect may be the fact that alcohol is converted into acetic acid by the liver. Acetic acid imparts some very important health benefits.

This is also based on hormesis, the idea that a small amount of a toxic substance causes health benefits, The organism is better able to cope with damage/aging when is being frequently stimulated by toxins (alcohol, free radicals from exercise, certain normally toxic antioxidants etc)

"The findings don't necessarily apply to men"

Another benefit of drinking (specifically wine) comes from its non-alcoholic ingredients such as catechins and resveratrol. These may improve the action of nitric oxide (mediated via oestrogenic receptors) and thus protect vascular endothelium and blood flow.

Drinking is often a social activity.
