So does anyone have any experience with learning a language online and can suggest some good, preferably free, resources?

With all of my surf trips to central america, I figured it is time I learn more Spanish than ordering beer and finding a bathroom.

I don't know how good they are but the about.com site has some good starter resources for languages. I learned German via distance learning (paid) and whilst the paid materials were the best, I did come across plenty of half-decent free resources online just by putting in "learn German."

Another tip for just starting out with a language is to watch TV for small children. Sounds silly but it really does help because it is simple and there is often a lot of repetition. You Tube can also help as can a little programme called Read On Player that allows you to watch certain channels from around the world for free, even if they're just public access ones advertising stuff. I'm a big fan of learning by listening to radio and music.

Hope that helps. :)
