I have often felt that certification for programming is of little use.

You are better off building a portfolio of work.

Hello there,
in any practical programming area, a certification doesn't make much diff. Better you start focusing on building applications in PHP than collecting PHP certicates.

I have to disagree with the replies. Just study Computer Science. Learning a single language without learning Computer Science will make you an amateur programmer. I've worked with a lot of those types and they always need constant help.
