Let me first say I realy wish I believed in the bible. The whole reason I plan on increasing my life span is due to my lack of belief. My one belief is.. that the bible was created by schizophrenics [1].

There are over 430 contradictions in the bible.

I don't think it was written by schizophrenics...though you probably just mean that as a sort of metaphorical joke. The problem with the bible is that it isn't really one text. It was written by an enormous number of people over a very long time. The old testament part in particular is a bronze age tribal history including different versions of creation myths and flood stories etc. and has considerable overlap with similar stories from other contemporary societies in the middle east. The history is peppered with bits of moralising from lots of deeply upset priest type people who seemed obsessive about almost everything. In modern times they might be referred for treatment. It is probably unlikely that any document stitched together in this way and then translated and retranslated, would be consistent. The more obnoxious aspects of the bible are just a reflection of the barbaric people who wrote it. Blaming gods for everything was normal then.

In addition to what John said, there is is also the issue of the verses being changed directly over time as well as more benign things like multiple translations mucking things up.

I thought we were not to quote outside web sites. No comment. :)

First I've heard of me being an outside website, or do you actually mean something else. It also seems a bit odd to describe your comment as no comment.

Look at his response to me in another thread, it made no sense either. Either he was drunk posting last night or he forgot his medication.

My problem with the Bible is that the plan laid out in it for humanity is worse than what a certain nazi-dictator had planned for jews. Jesus is portrayed as a "nice hippie guy", which is not reconciliable with his wish to have billions of people tortured forever. Go figure

Your description of Christianity’s plan for man is wrong. God wants that none should parish and the plan is that God does something about it. The outlook without God does not look so good either. Oh yes I am for longevity and science but....

God does not make anyone to be with or without Him against their will. If you don’t want to be with God, don’t. But, then don’t blame God because He allows your wish and faith.. For you at this time, God is Hitler. That has not been my experience. I don’t think God will force you to be with Hitler. That is not the way it works.

My problem with the bible is that it treated as something more than the interesting, but very unpleasant, historical document it is. If you know how the present version of it has been arrived at, and what it actually says,it is very difficult to understand how anyone could regard it as a serious guide to the good life. It might be possible to extract all the good bits and make a new, massively shorter, version, but it would have to be called something else. You would have to take out all the nasty bits about where to source your slaves and how to treat them, or bits about stoning people for victimless "crimes", or giving your daughter to a sex crazed mob to save a strange man.....etc.

You could see making children learn vast swathes of it, as in my childhood, as a form of child abuse. I can remember having to recite big chunks of gibberish and then swallow blatantly improbable interpretations. The stories are nasty. The god depicted is an interperate psychotic bully who revels in torture and theft. He orders his chosen people to steal other people's lands and kill all the males but keep the women as sex slaves, and we were told that this in some way showed the righteousness of the jews and their god. I suppose if Hitler had won we would all be learning the same sort of interpretations of his victories.

Last time I skyped god he said he was really pissed with all the people claiming to know what he thinks, particularly the fundamentalist bigots. He was really angry about the drivel that's presented as holy books.
