An interesting article in The Daily Mail that provides us with a bit of hope. I know that such treatments are probably a way off but at least they've discovered something in mice, which is a step in the right direction:

Drugs could one day be used to reverse the muscle-wasting effects of ageing, new research suggests.
Scientists have identified a key process responsible for muscle weakening in old age and used a chemical to block it in mouse studies.
The findings could pave the way to body-building anti-ageing drugs that keep people strong and fit near the end of their lives.

I hate the word hope. I like the word results much more.

Here is a quote from a comment on the same page.

Holy Basil Tea (Pukka three tulsi) available in most Sainsbury's supermarket stores inhibits FGF-2 and stops muscle wasting in older people. Apple peels have a chemical in that also does the same thing. Pukka three tulsi tea actually tastes nice, unlike many other herbal teas. I think you can buy it in tablet form as well. This 'research', is based on apple peel, and Holy Basil, (tulsi), so why wait for the drug companies to patent an extract, then sell it back to us for huge profits, when you can buy it now?

Anything printed in the Daily Mail has to be regarded as extremely suspect. The have a long history of rubbish science stories.

I also will add, that the anti-ageing drug will reverse only muscle wastage. Plus Daily Mail is not a scientific journal.

So, the critics became too much -> hope, not resuls; Daily Mail has a history of publishing rubbish; and the drug will reverse only muscle damage.

They are talking about a myostatin inhibitor,
these are already being used by body builders, and in trails for muscular Dystrophy, plus plans to use it on cattle for increased meat production,
growth hormone causes the liver to produce IGF 1 which builds muscle, but the body produces Myostatin which acts like a brake on the muscle building,
use of a Myostatin inhibitor results in releasing the brake giving large muscle increase's without having to do exercise as it works purely on muscle's and nothing else, look up ACE-031, MYTO 335, and follistatin 334
unfortunately very expensive,

Here's news published elsewhere with info on obtaining a copy of the paper, on request, from the UK Biotechnology, and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Harvard Stem Cell Institute and National Institutes of Health
http://www.eurekaler...l-smo092512.php

So FGF2 tells muscles stem cells to repair and grow when necessary.
These stem also replenish the pool of dormant stem cells when done with the repair and grow process.
For an unknown reason FGF2 levels stay high in older people which means that the pool of dormant stem cells never gets replenished and thus you run out of dormant stem cells.
