I have dysthmia, and my mood is neutral. I'm not sad or suicidal, but I have no motivation to do anything, poor attention and focus, anhedionia and no sex drive. I also cannot laugh much which is probably because of the anhedionia.

Anyway, I've been taking Maca on and off since this past summer and every time I start taking it, about after 3 days I become a little bit more motivated to do things. For example, I sometimes get a weak desire to go to the gym and exercise. My attention and focus also improve a little bit.

But, my anhedionia and poor sex drive do not improve much and there's very little to no change. I have also noticed that my body hair and beard growth thicker and more populated.

I only took 2 capsules of 500 mg of Maca root everyday. I took them in the morning after breakfast.

Does anyone know why Maca does this to me? I googled Maca's relationship with dopamine and norepinephrine and didn't get any scientific results.

Maybe it has something to do with sex hormones. Did you measure them? Did you have any disease or whatever? Maybe you need to increase testosterone and/or lower estrogen or sth like that. Also, check your vitamin D levels - if you are vitamin D deficient, that may cause low testosterone. Or it could be a million of other things ...

I take 5000 IU of Vitamin D3 every week day and skip the weekends so I'm pretty sure I'm not Vitamin D deficient. I guess it could be because of the sex hormones. I just wish I had a definite answer to this.

Well, go to the doctor and measure them.

“These results demonstrated that maca extract (250 and 500 mg/kg) showed antidepressant-like effects and was related to the activation of both noradrenergic and dopaminergic systems, as well as attenuation of oxidative stress in mouse brain.”
