I met Kenneth Hayworth of the Brain Preservation Foundation at the recent Alcor40 conference. He graciously agreed to an interview which will tentatively be conducted in the evening of Tuesday, November 20th. The bulk of the interview will center around science of neurology, brain preservation, and the plastination vs cryonics debate.

As always, please post any questions you might have for Mr. Hayworth here in the forum and I will be sure to ask.

Just finished up the interview with Kenneth Hayworth. Fascinating. Great detail about the current knowledge of the brain, the plastination vs. cryo debate, and touches upon the philosophy of identity. Another interview that will probably be edited and uploaded over the next week or so.

If you are wondering why there is a recent debate of chemo-preservation vs. cryopreservation, you will want to listen to this interview.

If you are wondering about the latest techniques in brainscanning, this is the interview.

If you were wondering how biological neuroscience intersects with digital brain simulations, you will find out here.

If you want to hear Dr. Hayworth lay down the gauntlet and say something he has not said publicly ever before. CHECK IT OUT!

Also, sorry about the lower quality audio in this interview. The audio inputs to my recording program got messed up and I had to do some fancy editing to restore it to a reasonable level. Let me know if there are any important parts that you cannot understand due to the audio quality.

In the whole chemo vs cryo debate, the key question is one of identity (and continuity of consciousness), not of physics. There is no question, based on current knowledge, that chemo-preservation "works" in preserving very fine structures. It might be vastly easier to reverse a cryo-suspension than a chemo-preservation (based on our current knowledge), but that is a side issue. The "chemo-crowd" is of the belief that a copy of you is still you. The idea is that if you scan your chemo-preserved brain and upload it to a different substrate, it is you. I have a hard time reconciling this (the uploaded copy is "you" AND the chemo-preserved body/brain is also "you"), but then I am not too smart. Maybe "you" would end up with multiple subjective viewpoints/experience, instead of the singular that we are used to. That would be interesting.

Anyway, the interview touches on this as well.
