I've been taking OLE for the past week 'cos I had a bottle lying around (first 500mg q.i.d., then 1000mg b.i.d.).

On the plus side, I've noticed some flu like symptoms -- coughing up mucus, etc. -- which I thought might indicate some kind of Herx reaction...?

On the down side, it's been making me really agitated and anxious; I've read in a couple of places that it acts as an MAO-B inhibitor, which I thought might be the cause.. does that sound likely?

Are there any other immune-enhancing, anti-fungal herbs that might not be as 'psychoactive' I could try it in its place?

The people who sell OLE must get a lot of reports of adverse reactions since they push this herx idea. But most likely it is toxic to your own cells as well as to bacteria. Here is a study using rats that should give anyone pause, expcially if you don't have any specific reason for taking it--

Microscopically both liver and kidneys showed histological alterations in the form of fatty cytoplasmic vacuolation, necrosis of the hepatocytes and a slight hemorrhage was recorded in the kidneys of the experimental animals especially those fed 0.9% olive leaf extract. The olive leaves extract should be handled with care in arts and other animals and special attention should be paid when using OLE for longer periods of time and at higher doses as it may result in an undesirable effect on liver and kidneys as it has been shown in the present study.

Herx shmerx. The Herxheimer reaction is the internet's go-to explanation for all manner of side effects. True Herx reactions are very rare. I think you have a mild infection. It's cold and flu season, after all...

I rotated this stuff into my regimen for a month (finished a bottle). Noticed no difference/effect whatsoever.
