So a couple years ago I remember reading that some ingredients in some sunscreens can actually cause cancer, as opposed to preventing it. Did this turn out to be true? Is there anything I should avoid?

Never been proven true in humans. Rats perhaps. I'd skip chemical sunscreens altogether. Re-applying every 2 hours is no fun. Living in the states, you have a number of good zinc oxide sunscreens to choose from. (Burnout, Eco, Purple Prairie...many more)

I concur with mustardseed41, it has not been proven, but for the sake of "it is better to be safe than sorry" I generally try to avoid chemical sunscreens (essentially all sunscreens are chemical besides zinc oxide & titanium dioxide). However natural sunscreens can be a pain if your pores clog really easily...
