I've been using Swanson's Bamboo extract capsules for silica. It is very good and a good price too. I take it with meals. Silica nourishes your teeth, bones, cartilage, hair, skin and nails.

Is it better than orthosilicic acid?

If you meal Jarrowsil and that kind of thing, made from sand, yes!

Was looking at this since it's one of the better priced(pound-for-pound) silica supps that I have seen.

Just seemed like too much silica considering most other supps are in the 2-60mg range.

Does anyone know the half-life of silica in the body? Also heard it doesn't contain thiaminase which is a plus.

Silica is silicon dioxide, the most common constituent of sand.

Biosil and Jarrowsil are stabilized orthosilic acid. I suppose it may be converted from silica, I don't know.

Even though plant food contains high levels of silicon, its bioavailability from these sources is questionable, due to poor solubility of actual silicon forms present in these foods. Efficient absorption in the GI tract would require their breakdown to soluble species such as ortho-silicic acid, present in drinking and mineral waters in the range of 2 to 5 mg silicon/L and in beer ranging from 9 to 39 mg silicon/L. Absorption studies indicate that the ortho-silicic acid is a main readily bioavailable source of silicon for humans, whereas its higher polymers are not of significant absorbability. In a placebo-controlled study on eight volunteers, Jugdaohsingh et al. showed that 53% of administered ortho-silicic acid is excreted in the urine, whereas the ingestion of polymeric silicic acid causes only a marginal increase of silicon in the urine. This result substantiates the statement that polymeric silicic acids and amorphous silicon dioxide are of poor bioavailability.

Plant silica has to be extracted. Then it is fine. This bamboo extract has, obviously, been extracted. I take two to three capsules a day and it is fine for me. Probably a high dose for some people. It doesn't seem to build up and linger like Vitamin D or K. I've taken all the kinds of silica they seem to have, and it doesn't seem to build up, but it isn't good to take too much of anything, so listen to your body.

Taking ground up raw horsetail capsules is a bad idea because they aren't extracted. If you want to you can put all the capsules in some water, bring it to a boil, simmer it for twenty minutes and steep for twenty more. Then filter it through a coffee filter and put in in a very clear jar in the frig. The resultant gel will be absorbable silica.
