The United States Congress is trying to tax internet purchases. They are trying to pass a law forcing internet merchants to collect state sales taxes for your state government on things you buy from other states. That means internet merchants would have to keep track of sales taxes from fifty states and remit payments to them. If you lived in New York State and bought something from a company in Nevada, they'd have to collect New York State sales taxes from you and send them to New York State. A lot of people here buy supplements over the internet. They would be affected. If you want to see a summary of the bill, go here:

When contacting Congress, a snail mail letter or a phone call has more impact than an email. They get so many emails that it isn't clear that they even read them anymore.

I don't understand this law. With the commerce clause of the constitution, congress has the task of regulating interstate commerce. This means states can't charge tariffs or sales tax for interstate transactions. So today, if you have a person in New York buying something from a business in New Jersey over the internet (or phone, or mail order, same thing), with the New Jersey business having no presence in New York, the state of New York should not have any authority to tax that transaction.

I don't understand how an act of federal congress under the commerce clause can shift the responsibility to the states to collect tax on interstate commerce. At the same time, if congress wanted to pass a national interstate sales tax, that's clearly valid under the wording of the constitution.

There is already a state that forces mail order businesses in other places to collect and send them their state sales taxes when their residents buy stuff from them. These businesses are not in the state whose sales tax this is. I believe this has been litigated. The good news is that they have only been able to force a few large businesses to do this so far. If a writer in that state is fortunate enough to sell a book, this state makes them pay a 5% sales tax. The writers aren't able to force the publisher to pay this so it comes out of their pockets. This is true for other professionals or artists. Whether they sell their services to someone in state or out of state, they are supposed to pay 5% sales tax. If it is an out of state customer, it's doubtful that they would pay this. It would likely come out of the artist's pocket. Some of this has been going on for decades.

Our increasingly desperate governments will be coming after your money any way they think they can get it. If you don't like it, speak up.
