Captain Mark Vandroff, a manager at the Navy Shipyard was identified as Mark Vandross or Mark Vandorf on TV news shows, in spite of clearing spelling out his name "V-A-N-D-R-O-F-F as in Frank" during a press conference.

Interesting side note: I covered a plane accident for a national publication as a stringer years ago. Stringers are freelance reporters that news outlets hire to cover events in the stringer's hometown. One of the survivors had a difficult-to-spell slavic name. Every other media outlet misspelled her name, including network news. I think the MSM misspelled other subjects' names too. I didn't.

The publication I worked for was known for distorting reality, but on this occasion they mustered four stringers 5,000 miles away in the middle of the night to cover one plane accident. I got a call at 4:00 a.m. At least when they published something that wasn't true, it was probably on purpose.
