Wow, the blowback from the CIA is HUGE. PS, Wolfowitz was involved, everything he touches is bad.

I thought this was common knowledge, but maybe it is one of those things that is never mentioned in the U.S. media (which are about as free in practice as Pravda in the U.S.S.R. used to be).

"which are about as free in practice as Pravda in the U.S.S.R. used to be" Yes, I was shocked to realize that Ronald Reagan was key to Osama bin Laden's career. It happened 26 years ago, and I hadn't heard a word over that period. We never discussed CIA and Ronald's responsibility.

So they didn't live up to what was expected of them. Where is the issue?

The US was at war with socialism/communism and the Afghan territory was help by the Soviets, so we made an ally of our enemy's enemy and let the strife impede soviet progress until the soviet bloc failed, when we didn't need the Taliban fighting the Soviets for us to prevent all out war, the relationship changed. It's not a big conspiracy theory, you just have to know some history.

I would like very much to see an analysis of how smart the decision was. We have 20/20 vision now, but somebody let Reagan say they are the moral equivalents of our founding fathers. How could that happen? Did the CIA hornswoggle the president?

No, we were just making the Taliban feel like we had their back so they'd fight the Soviets... Reagan lied, get over it.
