justinb thats not quite true if you lived long enough to know exactly where every single particle in the universe was and where it was going at what speed you would be able to predict the future and know if you would live forever.

In my own personal philosophy, the answer is a resounding yes. Infernity, this is not necessarily a dumb poll.

Am I immortal? If I live forever, and say I do, don't I qualify to have the title of immortal now? Or do I have to wait until I gain enough insurance (anti-death technologies) to guarantee me eternal life in order to get that title?
Even if you live forever I'm not sure you would qualify as immortal. Doesn't the term immortal delineate someonce who CANNOT die? We all have the potential to die and are thus mortal, right?

Yes, that is the conventional definition. It's not a good idea to make up new definitions for existing words, so... I'm afraid none of us are or ever will be immortal. If (and only if) we are able to marshal sufficient resources to do something about the problem of aging, we might someday be able to live a very long time, providing we are not killed by something unexpected.Am I immortal? Still, "a trillion" is selling yourself short. There will still be stars being born in a trillion years.

It's the first thousand that's the hardest!
I would say, given our current situation, it's the first 120 that are the hardest.

even making into the next decade is hard, given the risks like accidents and homicides and new killer diseases. gosh , sometimes i'm afraid to fall asleep or something , for ex after studying /working a long time and fall into a sleep so deep that it's like death afraid to never wake up the next day, that would certainly suck and i'd be fucked to die in the middle of the night never knowing the difference and miss out on future life and the good things
who are the 8 ppl that voted "yes' anyway? come on now, who are you immortals , share the secrets

Yes. We live in dangerous days indeed. Which reminds me that I must make it a habit to not run to 80mph in the city... i just can't help it when the streets (wide, big streets) have less traffic, it's just so fun.

this poll isn't gonna get all true answers. as far as we know, no one is immortal, but if there're immortals, i presume a good (although selfish) choice for them is to spend it in hiding. that's what id probably have done if i started as immortal in ancient times, constantly moving to places and changing identities or spend life in "hiding" , too big of risk of being exposed, then a possibility of losing the immortality , being killed , ripped apart, eaten, studied ,

LOL well its impossible to be immortal; I figure the IA is more about extending the avg life span far beyond what it is now then actually to attain imortality. There are an infinite number of ways to die but very few ways to 'live'. Wait for the Blue brain project to finish and then ya might get some serious sci fi stuff going on.
