Equity crowd funding is on the horizon. It's already being done in Germany and should be available in the next year. Basically it's kickstarter, but you get to be one of the investors.
I'd like to propose that we get started in advance of availability of the equity crowd funding sites and run a fundraiser for $10,000 to be spent on as many as 100 startups (so long as investment sizes allow $100 stakes). The fundraiser would be an annual event.
LongeCity would then place the money raised into a savings account with a credit union until such time as the crowd sourcing platforms present a good investment opportunity that would further LC's goals or simply offer a great investment opportunity.
This endeavor would allow LC to build an investment based income that would enable members to get more involved and support a greater number of projects and may eventually lead to part and full time staff positions.
This initiative also represents another opportunity to expand the membership base of LC.
