Thanks Lazarus for helping me articulate something I've been mulling over...

This is I think is the primary question. Not whether you wish a strong central gov't to do liberal or conservative things. But whether you are willing to turn over that much power to any central gov't. I gather the US central gov't used to be....less strong and local governements (who at least theoretically are more likely to be respobsible to the people) relatively stronger. Not saying that is the ideal answer, but does sound preferable to the present circumstance.

This I think is the libertarian...question--or at least my question.

It is interesting to read all the comments about Bush and the present administration. Not that I'm overly fond of bush, and not that I'm not concerned about potential abuses. However, I am absolutely TERRIFED of a strong central gov't ruled by very well meaning people who would enforce their beliefs on me "for my own good".

As Lazarus reminded us:

"As for the question of fascism I suggest that people remember that the official name of the Nazi Party was the Nationalist Socialist Party and that they were an amalgam of both extremist socialist doctrine combined with extremist capitalist doctrine..."

I'm still trying to reconcile the reality of fully caused agents (void of classical FW) with libertarianism, considering all implications.

Government seems necessary, but inefficient and easily corruptable. I believe the US central government is too powerful, and more power should be ceded to local governments. Though I'm unsure how small, government should be, to optimally serve the people.
