Dr. Gerald Feinberg, a Columbia University Professor, wrote a book the Prometheus Project. Its principle idea is that we can accomplish anything that does not contradict the principles of physics. He advocated people choosing what they want and have society try to reach that goal. It may be life extension, better intelligence, etc.
The book was writted in 1969. It is still relevant. He even wrote advocating articles about cryonics and came to a few New York City Cryonic meetings. It may be difficult to buy this book today. You may be able to get it on line.
