Hydergine (Ergoloid mesylates) is one of the original nootropics. It is chemically similar to LSD and shares the same inventor, Albert Hoffman. Hydergine seems like one of the most interesting nootropics out there, yet I never see anyone discussing it. Is this due to the possible side effects, high price, or what?

 

According to this article ( http://mavericksofth...-albert-hofmann ), hydergine is a potent vasodilator and antioxidant, increases mitochondrial activity in the brain, increases BDNF expression, and clears out lipofuscin. I want to believe.

I found it to be a good all-around nootropic with antidepressant and pro-motivational properties. Since it's a vasodilator, it will produce headaches if the dosage is too high. Titrating up is a good idea. Hydergine is also an excellent potentiator of many nootropics and other drugs.

 

A lot of people abandoned hydergine when it was found to possibly contribute to fibrosis, but I think the risks were greatly exaggerated. Low and infrequent doses are very well-tolerated.

 

Brand-name hydergine is no longer being manufactured, so generic "ergoloid mesylates" are what you need to look for. iron-dragon.com sells a liquid version. Nicergoline is a good alternative as well - it has all the benefits of hydergine without the headaches. You can get it at nubrain.com
