Our website is the heart and lifeblood of LongeCity and we are always looking for ways to improve it.

Over the years we have had many kind offers from IT-savvy volunteers for assistance.

However 98% of our site code is run via or in connection with Invision Power (Board) related software -all the site features are IPB-related modules and modifications. So we really need people who are familiar with this application, or who are willing to commit some time to understanding it. Knowledge of PHP and MYSQL is key.

Trust is essential to safeguard the privacy of our users and the stability and integrity of the site. Until we have been able to fully establish such a relationship, we may be looking for projects that can be worked on abstractly, without needing direct access to the LongeCity server and files.

While as a non-profit org, we are not in a position to pay IT workers a commercial rate, some financial compensation for complex projects is certainly a possibility and a budget has been set aside for this purpose.

To discuss your involvement with IT development at LongeCity, please use the contact form.

Fortunately, we have a number of Members with advanced IT skills who have very kindly signaled their willingness to assist with site development.

Unfortunately, these days knowledge of coding itself is almost secondary to familiarity about the specifics of a given content management system.

The main system that LongeCity uses is "invision power board 3.4.x."  anyone familiar with this system - we'd love to hear from you.

Alternatively, if you have a robust knowledge of PHP, MYSQUL and javascript, you can probably pick things up rather swiftly- anyone willing to invest the effort is also very welcome to apply.

Some compensation for time invested can be offered on a per-project basis, with a view towards an ongoing 'Engineers' Officer retainer.

Please use the contact form.

What are some of the actual projects that need to be done? Just maintenance of the board? implementation of new pages or modules?

The latter.

plans include

  1. - migrate to the most recent version of IPB software, and retain all our existing mods and tweaks (difficult)
  2. - fix bugs and and improve the 'groups' feature (moderate)
  3. - simplify and improve the 'articles' (IPB content) system (moderate)
  4. - develop our 'connect' feature to become more functional (moderate-difficult)
  5. - improve the in-build connectivity with social media (?)
  6. - implement a 'reply in new thread' feature  (moderate)
  7. - better integration of our podcast with online platforms such as itunes (easy- moderate)
  8. - working with our host to improve site security via SSL (easy- moderate)
