Awesome news. To be specific though this is only for Genital Herpes, not oral herpes.
The researchers took an unconventional approach to vaccine creation and simply generated a herpes virus without its protein lock and key system known as glycoprotein D. For years scientists tried to make a vaccine based on a reaction to glycoprotein D but to no avail. Turns out the mice they injected the modified herpes into simply figured out how to defend themselves on their own, creating a suprising immunological response called antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC). When they injected ADCC blood serum into fellow mice they showed passive resistance against it!
To quote the doctor, Dr. Jacobs. "It's almost as if the virus evolved gD-2 specifically to hide the other antigens. gD-2 turns out to be a Trojan horse that misleads the immune system."

On a side note Paul Ewald, resident evolutionary pathologist, has long suspected that Herpes was the culprit in many cancers. His theory was that Herpes lays dormant in the body away from our white blood cells and creates slow acting cancers as it hijacks cells to sustain itself.
He likens viruses to criminals, some criminals are wild and violent who attempt to gain access to a host through brute force, like cholera which doesn't rely on the human body to transmit but quickly creates diarreha in order to get itself back into the water. Other criminals, however, do not announce their presence and rather "lay low" attempting to avoid law enforcement and siphon resources from the system like a mafia king. But even criminals that lay low have to venture out to make contacts every so often... hence genital herpes expresses itself through a person's privates every few years.
