My wife and I are thinking about having a baby. We're 29, active, with reasonably decent diets, but neither of us has been taking vitamins or supplements. In reading through the forums, I've decided to start with Ortho-Core and Ortho-Mind.

1) What would you recommend my wife take? We're thinking about trying to conceive no sooner than 3 months from now. Our goal at the moment is a healthy baby - not immortality. While they may both be about "optimal health" I'd rather err on the side of tried-and-true vitamins/supplements at this point. Suggestions?

2) Keeping my short-term goals in mind, would you think I'm reasonably covered with just the two AOR products? Any other recommendations or considerations come to mind?

Many thanks for all the advice on these forums...

Not enough B vitamins in there. NO way for someone who is pregnant. And she should be taking....say 2 mg total folic acid/day.

ANd omega 3 fatty acids....I forget if she wants EPA or DHA..but one is very important to kiddie brain development...you can call nordic naturals or brownse their website...I just posted that link recently...forget...ya probably was at avant....

see my basic recommendations in this thread:

Thanks for the reply, scottl...

Just to clarify, I wouldn't have my wife take either of the AOR products. AOR documentation says there are no studies related to Ortho-Core and pregnancy and thus they wouldn't advise taking it. With Ortho-Mind they flat-out say to avoid it. To make my previous questions a little clearer:

1) Are the Ortho products reasonable things for me to be taking? (e.g. any known sperm-related problems, etc that anyone may have heard of) and

2) What (non-Ortho) products/supplements would people recommend for my wife during pregnancy prep/prenatal period?

Thanks again

as a man, i personally would not take anything but the basics(multi+omega3) for a few months before and during the entire time i was trying to have a baby... theres no way to know how all those 'unconventional' things in orthocore will effect your sperm/dna... better safe than sorry when it comes to babies.

this is a question you probably wanna run over with a skilled nutritionist...

Omega 3's, preferably from fish oil as the conversion from ALA to DHA/EPA (plant source) is very inefficient. DHA is required for optimal brain development (not opinion but a fact).

15% and that's if you're very lucky.

1 tablespoon of flaxoil provides 8000 - 10000MG ALA...

15% is the correct number for DHA... EPA varries alot depending on teh person... but DHA converts to EPA at a rate of about 15%also...

so your looking at 1200 - 1500MG DHA conversion per tablespoon... most people taking 2-3 tablespoons per day.

whats so low about that? fishoil marketers like to overexagerate about how ALA doesnt convert to DHA/EPA properly... its called a marketing scheme, and is complete BS.

Thanks for your reply, ajnast4r... I have a couple of follow-up questions, if you don't mind:

1) You mentioned you wouldn't want to take anything "unconventional" when trying to conceive (I certainly agree with you, btw). I also saw you recommended Perque's Life Guard in another posting - is this the sort of multi you'd recommend as conventional? Out of curiosity (so that I can investigate for future use) what in Ortho-Core is considered unconventional?

2) Nordic Naturals recommends two products for pregnant women:

DHA
DHA: 450 mg / EPA: 90 mg / other Omega-3: 40 mg / Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol): 15 IU

Arctic Cod Liver Oil
DHA: 625 mg / EPA: 410 mg / other Omega-3: 225 mg / Vitamin A: 1500–2750 IU / Vitamin D: 5–40 IU / Vitamin E: 5 IU

Do you have any opinion regarding which is the better choice?

Or would you perhaps just opt for Ultimate Omega?
EPA: 700 mg / DHA: 500 mg / other Omega-3: 200 mg / Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherols): 11 IU

I'm still searching for a good prep/prenatal vitamin for my wife - we plan to consult a nutritionist, as well. Advice on the search for a nutritionist is more than welcome... Thanks again...

Source Naturals makes the best prenatal in my opinion...it has a good dose of folic acid, a high dose of choline (most have almost zero amounts), and DHA (I would not advise having high doses of EPA unless she suffers from depression). Used it before and after my daugthers birth and so far she is developing ahead of the game....of course the piracetam probably helped in that too.

As far as your supplements Ortho-Core & Ortho-Mind are a great start.....also the supplements in them have shown no damage to DNA or sperm so I would not be concerned.

You may want to add TMG 500-1,000 mg and Green tea extract 300 mg or so as far as basic add on's.

LM

Do you still give your daughter piracetam??

How old is she??

If not yet ...How old will you start her on nootropics ??

I can't imagine the kinds of minds humans of the future will have......

OFF TOPIC RAVE:

I was in this strange lucid state in between going in and out of dreams the other night. It is as hard to describe and just as alien to normal conciousness as a DMT state. I was doing maths and incredibly complex visualisations all flickering by at some crazy "framerate" all simultaneously. I have never experienced the likes of it before. Conciously unconcious? Super "conciousness"....
words hahaha

And yet I can be so DUH doing something stupid like digging holes and my brain is almost totally switched off. Bored ???!!!
I was digging some holes for foundation posts today and I noticed how dull I was and doing things really stupidly.

2 extremes from the same brain.

I think our brains are being hugely underutilized.....Insanely vivid dreams and states like the first one I mentioned above is enough for mo to think so.

I read somewhere on this site actually about a guy inducing savant like abilities by freezing certain parts of the brain with magnetic fields. Very interesting!
