The hibiscus flower species known as hibiscus sabdariffa,
is a powerful antioxidant, liver protector and exhibits
marked anticancer activity.

It is used for its medicinal values traditionally worldwide,
particulary in Thailand.

Its juice is commonly made into a cordial and can be found
in supermarkets all over Malaysia. Unfortunately, these
commercial products also have very high amounts of
sugar added.

It's also a very popular drink amongst the Malays here.
They love it with all three meals, and you can see them
drinking it at virtually all food outlets - hawker stalls,
coffee shops and restaurants, and it's very unusual
to find a Malay home without it. Unfortunately, it's again
served with tons of sugar added, to the extent that the
drink tastes almost entirely of sugar rather than beverage
(the Malays have a very sweet tooth).

This may well explain why the Malays have the lowest
incidence of cancer (1 in 7 versus 1 in 4 for the Chinese -
the highest) despite the fact that they are the heaviest
smokers, but the highest rates of diabetes in Malaysia.

I'm surprised that no supplement manufacturer has
come out with standardized extracts to date.
