China and Britain have started genetic engineering on human embryos which opens the possibility that in the near future we might be able to design our own children. Perhaps in the near term these opportunities will only be available to the rich and unscrupulous seeking an edge for their next generation, corporations creating the next generation of elites and governments guaranteeing sporting success but in the fullness of time I imagine preventing disease, increasing longevity and intelligence will take priority.

I've had my SNPs mapped by 23andMe and there are lots of things I would change. Promethease does a decent report comparing your SNPs to known medical studies and is a good resource for what genes you might modify in a gattaca type scenario to make your child "The Best of You" which is fine, but this doesn't give your children super powers like indestructible bones, the ability to run forever or see frequencies of light unobserved by others.

I think it will be a lot of fun to identify super power SNPs and review them.

Theme: Physical Robustness

Brief: Radically increased bone density.

Location: Chromosome 11q12–13 (odds of linkage, >1 million to 1), an interval that contains LRP5. Affected members of the kindred had a mutation in this gene, with valine substituted for glycine at codon 171 (LRP5V171).

MOA: Impairing the action of a normal antagonist of the Wnt pathway and thus increasing Wnt signaling.

Additional Information: A single mutation causes radically increased bone density in order of 5 standard deviations above normal. Homozygous mutation causes issues with excessive bone development and cranial nerves being pinched.

Drug availability: Romosozumab, Stage 3 trials.

Downsides:

Heavier than normal, poor swimmer.

Observable characteristics such as square jaws, growth on mouth platate.

Increased mineral metabolism.

Homozygous mutation sclerosteosis.

Notable Persons: TBD

I'm more interested in genetic engineering in adults than embryos. For example, for eliminating TERT or for putting mitochondrial genes in the nucleus.
