Hi,

I happen to love this nootropic, but i have a lot of concern about its safety. In my searches I have come upon several vague warnings about the possible danger of using pyroglutamate, but I never see any concrete info on this. Also, given that it is molecularly close to glutamate, what is the danger of pyroglutamate causing excitotoxic brain damage?

Given the extreme paucity of info about this substance, I would also appreciate links to any studies, as well as subjective experences with this substance, particularly over the long term.

Thanks!

also interested since it's just $9.99 for 500g over at 1fast400...

It's an amino acid, so my un-researched opinion is that it's relatively safe at about 1g/day in divided doses.

BUMP.

I have a bottle, haven't touched it because I also can't find conclusive evidence for or against.

"I have a bottle, haven't touched it because I also can't find conclusive evidence for or against."

So why do you have it in the first place?

exigentsky, can you ever think of a time when you have bought something and then decided that you really didn't want it?

I first read articles stating that it does in fact help with certain facets of memory and recall, but this could be because due to the fact of it having an extreme excitotoxic reaction.

Well, yes, of course I've brought things I've really had little need for, but I did try to make them useful. You have brought a supplement and you are not even unsure if you should try it. I doubt the safety issues are serious, you could afford to try it a few times. But then again, don't listen to me, I don't know much about it.

L-Pyroglutamic Acid is a component of AOR's Ortho Mind product. They have more to say about it, but your concerns seem to be addressed here...

Despite the sound of the name, L-Pyroglutamic Acid is not a potential “excitotoxin” like glutamate. Studies in laboratory animals have not only shown that feeding large doses of this nutrient to newborn mice is harmless, but that direct injection of L-Pyroglutamic Acid into the adult brain causes no negative effects. In fact, an animal experiment demonstrated that L-Pyroglutamic Acid actually protects the brain from glutamate excitotoxicity!

But is L-Pyroglutamic Acid exactly the same as L-Pyroglutamate?
